Municipal Elections and Endorsements

If it hasn’t been delivered yet, keep your eyes peeled this week…primary election ballots are on their way!

The O2 Utah team has already met with, and endorsed, a number of candidates in key municipal races throughout the state. Click here to see the full list of our endorsements so far. Be on the lookout for more endorsements ahead of November’s general election.

Keep in mind: some cities are skipping the primary election and doing ranked choice voting (RCV) during November’s general election. Those RCV cities include Genola, Heber, Kearns, Lehi, Magna, Midvale, Millcreek, Payson, Salt Lake City, South Salt Lake, Vineyard, and Woodland Hills.

Important Dates:

  • Sept. 5 (Election Day): drop off or postmark your ballot by this date

  • August 29: last day to request a mail ballot

  • August 25: last day to register to vote (you can also register in person at an early voting location or polling location on Election Day)

HB 411 (Community Renewable Energy Program)

Back in 2019, HB 411 (Community Renewable Energy Program) passed the legislature and was signed into law. The program, one of the country’s first for renewable energy, gave cities the ability to work with Rocky Mountain Power to provide 100% renewable energy to residents and businesses by 2030.

Recently, we received positive news as the Community Renewable Energy Agency Board approved the proposed utility agreement with Rocky Mountain Power.

Transitioning from Rocky Mountain Power’s dirty fleet to renewable sources is the single biggest step Utah can take to reduce our carbon footprint.

Action Needed: If you live in one of the 18 participating communities, it is crucial to stay in the program. Please contact your city council and encourage them to sign the utility agreement to remain in the program. It is helpful to cite why renewable energy is important to you and its benefits for our air quality and climate.

In The News

In a historic climate win for Montana, a judge ruled the state's failure to consider emissions from energy and mining projects violates residents' constitutional rights to a clean and healthy environment.

Sixten plaintiffs, aged five to 22, sued the state, challenging the Montana Environmental Policy Act.

“Today, for the first time in U.S. history, a court ruled on the merits of a case that the government violated the constitutional rights of children through laws and actions that promote fossil fuels, ignore climate change laws, and disproportionately imperil young people,” said Julia Olson, the chief legal counsel for the case.

Kudos to all involved — we hope this case sets a meaningful precedent in holding polluters accountable!
